It's an almost Tolkienesque sort of place according to the man from the AA book of Shropshire walks , with spectacular abandoned quarries and deeply sunken lanes. After enjoying the views from the open summit of the hill, we descend to the attractive village of Clive. From here we traverse the Shropshire plains and farmland to Hadnall for lunch, and possibly a pub stop. We then join the Shropshire way to the village of Grinshill and once again ascend into the wooded slopes of Grinshill Hill and back to the carpark. Lunch required.

Saturday, 7th June 2014   CANOEING ON THE WYE    2 nights    Grade 2
I am planning to organise another canoeing trip for the weekend of June Saturday 7th to Monday 9th. We will most likely be doing the Wye river again, which is an idyllic stretch of waterway through an unspoilt green corridor of Herefordshire. This trip is suitable for anyone- no previous experience of canoeing is necessary. The river is fairly tame, there are a few fast flowing sections but nothing really to worry about. The two overnight stops will be at riverside campsites, pitching fees are extremely cheap. Overall the total cost of the trip, including the canoe hire, will come to approximately £70 per person. If we car share to get down to Symonds Yat then this will keep the petrol costs down as well. For further details check the Facebook event feed, or drop me an email if you have any questions

A spectacularly scenic walk from Monsal Head to Eyam and Cressbrookdale via High Rake, Stoney Middleton, Foolow and Wardlow. Lunch will be in Eyam (the halfway point) where there's a lovely wee courtyard cafe (and a pub!). At Wardlow we'll perhaps stop briefly to sample wee half of Black Lurcher (Abbeydale) at the infamous 17th century inn, the 'Three Stags Heads'. We finish the walk at Monsal Head Hotel (Stable Bar), which boasts some fine ales, a scenic beer garden overlooking the dales, and excellent food. There's live music from 6.30pm for those that fancy staying on for a meal. Please be aware that the total ascent is 2,500ft, and that some sections can potentially be very muddy and slippery after heavy rain. Due to the bountiful sheep and cow population on this route (including two bulls) and the rather abundant stiles (80 plus) it may not be suitable for dogs. Lunch required.

Friday, 22nd August 2014   WENSLEYDALE WEEKEND    3 nights    Grade 2
Looks like there will b 19 to 20 people going, so we are going to take over the Hostel I should think. Wensleydale looks like a very picturesque area as I was planning the walks the other day. However, as much of it looks to be open heathland when you are up on the hills, a lack of interconnecting footpaths means that shorter half day walks are difficult to find. Anyhow, this is what I have planned: Fri 22nd: Midday start for a 5 to 6 mile walk from the Hostel, Sat: 14 miles waterfall walk from the hostel, Sun: 15 miles from Aysgarth, Mon: 11 miles in Wharfdale. I posted walk profiles on the Facebook event feed

Sunday, 31st August 2014   EARL STERNDALE TO HOLLINSCLOUGH 5 PEAK CHALLENGE    10 miles  6 hrs   Grade 3
Start Time: 10:15am    Grid Ref: SK091669. The walk starts in Earl Sterndale by The Quiet Woman pub, postcode SK17 0BU. Parking is available on the road but it is a small village so I would recommend car sharing where possible. We will meet on the village green outside the pub and next to a red telephone box. There are no toliets on the walk. If you pass through Longnor on your drive to Earl Sterndale, there are public toilets there.
This walk consists of 5 hills with very steep inclines and walking along several narrow ridges. The hills we will ascend are Hitter Hill, Parkhouse Hill, Chrome Hill, Hollins Hill and High Wheeldon (the latter being the highest at 420 metres). It is a difficult and challenging walk but worth it for the spectacular scenery. If the weather is bad on the day, an alternative route around the hills might be taken for safety reasons. Walking poles would be helpful on this walk. Lunch required.

Sunday, 26th October 2014   NEW STARTER WALK: HOLMES CHAPEL TO SWETTENHAM ALONG THE RIVER DANE    8 miles  5 hrs   Grade 1
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ757678. Getting to Holmes Chapel should be fairly easy for most, just exit the M6 at junction 18. The walk be be starting from the Vickarage Hotel, CW4 8EF, which is on the A50 a mile or so down the road from Holmes Chapel towards Knutsford. The owners have asked if we could park the cars at the rear of the hotel, as the pub can be busy on Sundays.
Swettenham, and it's surrounding countryside is a place little visited. This is because it lies off the beaten track down a no though road. This isolation has resulted in a hamlet where the hurley-burley of modern life seems so far away. "The Qunita" in Swettenham is the home of Sir Bernard Lovell of Jodrell Bank fame. There is also a fine old inn called the Swettenham Arms, which is well worth calling in at. The walk follows the gently undulating plain of the Dane river, a perfect example of rustic-arable British countryside, with the Dane meandering through green pastures. As we return to Holmes Chapel we pass through the stately managed park land of Devonport Hall. The majority of the walk is easy going without any strenuous uphills, however there is one slope in a forest where the path has disappeared down a land slip, which means into order to get back on the path there is a bit of an "athletic scramble". Unfortunately this section can't be avoided but as the rest of the walk is so pleasant I don't really want to abandon it. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK115703. The walk starts from the Church Inn, in Chelmorton. There are probably plenty of ways to get there, but this is the route I took that seemed to work out well: from Buxton take the A6 Matlock road, then take the A515 Chelmorton road which will be on the right. Carry on down this road and turn left at the 2 green bus stops into a very narrow lane. When you come to the T junction find somewhere to park, the pub is to the left.
This walk offers some surprisingly good views. There are 2 steep climbs, which are over fairly quick thankfully. Although the walk isn't particularly muddy, the paths are a little over grown in places. After leaving the village we climb the grassy rise of Calton hill and link up with the Limestone way with some great views across the Peak district towards Priestcliffe hill. Heading down into the valley we then follow Chee dale and amble along the wooded banks of the River Wye. Unfortunately the footpath appears to be closed a bit further on, so we have to tackle a steep climb up to Wormhill. From there we take a farm drove road and join the Pennine Bridleway and along the cycle path in Wyedale. One last steep climb up onto the pleateau of Chelmorton Flat and Midshires way and back into Chelmorton. Lunch required.

Sunday, 30th November 2014   3 SHIRES HEAD    10 miles  6 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ998662. Turn off the Leek to Buxton A53 and head through Flash village, and after about 2 miles there will be a gravel parking area off the right.
This classic walk takes us across one of the most elevated sections of the White peak area of the Peak District, expect some moderate ascents with rewarding views. We head away from the Roaches and follow the Dane River to the picturesque bridge and water fall at 3 Shires head. From here there is a climb up to top of Axe Edge, where we then start to make our descent to the village of Flash, and possibly a pub stop at the the New Inn which marks just over the half way point on the walk. After leaving the village we then make our way back to the carpark by a gently undulating route along country lanes and footpaths around Gradbach hill. From memory there is one particularly boggy bit, so good boots and gaiters recommended. Lunch required.
