Parking is available at the pay and display car park opposite the Co-Operative supermarket in the centre of Church Stretton. There are a couple of car parks; we will meet at the one with the public conveniences.
After climbing out of Church Stretton via a waterfall up onto The Long Mynd, we should enjoy a "superlative ridge top walk", with magnificent views on both sides, before dropping back down into the valley and then up a steep climb onto Ragleth Hill to review where we have been. This walk does contain short stretches of scrambling and some strenuous climbing (150 metres of which is a steep ascent after 7 miles of walking). Lunch required.

Sunday, 2nd September 2012   CHELMORTON CHEEDALE CIRCULAR    11 miles  5 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK114702. The walk starts from the Church Inn, in Chelmorton. There are probably plenty of ways to get there, but this is the route I took that seemed to work out well: from Buxton take the A6 Matlock road, then take the A515 Chelmorton road which will be on the right. Carry on down this road and turn left at the 2 green bus stops into a very narrow lane. When you come to the T junction find somewhere to park, the pub is to the left.
This walk offers some surprisingly good views. There are 2 steep climbs, which are over fairly quickly thankfully. Although the walk isn't particularly muddy, the paths are a little over grown in places. I not not recommend wearing shorts (like I did). We start from the grassy rise of Calton hill and link up with the Limestone way, great some great views across the Peak district towards Priestcliffe hill. Heading down into the valley we then link up with Cheedale and amble along the wooded banks of the River Wye. Unfortunately the footpath appears to be closed a bit further on, so we have to tackle a steep climb up to Wormhill. From there we take a farm drove road and join the Pennine Bridleway and along the cycle path in Wyedale. The next steep climb take us up onto the Midshires way and back into Chelmorton. Lunch required.

Sunday, 9th September 2012   MANIFOLD VALLEY AND THOR'S CAVE    9 miles  5 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK131506. From Leek take the A523 signposted Ashbourne. After about 10 miles take the turning on the left to Ilam. The carpark is in Ilam Hall and cost £4 unless you're a National Trust member. There may be a bit of free parking available on the road outside the grounds, by the war memorial, but you will have to walk the half mile or so up the drive of Ilam Hall from where the walk starts.
From Ilam Hall, we enjoy a short riverside stretch along the bubbling Manifold River, before climbing to the eastern edge of the Manifold Valley for stunning views along the valley and in all directions. After passing through a nature reserve, the walk runs through the pretty village of Wetton, where we have an opportunity for a break at the Royal Oak pub. After lunch, we follow the walk as it drops into the Manifold Valley, with an opportunity to explore the impressive Thor's Cave, bring a head torch if you fancy a bit of spelunking! Making use of the Manifold Track cycle trail for a short distance as it runs alongside the Manifold - usually a dry riverbed, as the river runs underground along this stretch in all but very wet conditions - we soon climb out of the valley once again, near the limestone cliffs of Beeston Tor (a popular spot for climbers). After a steady climb up to Throwley Hall and its herd of white Charolais cattle, the gentle descent back to Ilam Hall makes for a relaxing wind down to the walk. Keep a lookout for the distinctive flat-topped pyramid shape of Thorpe Cloud towards the last leg of the walk. Lunch required.
