Sunday, 9th January 2011   THE CANNOCK CHASE "CAFE" WALK    8 miles  5 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ972211. Directions to Milford Common Car Park:- Follow the A34 out of Stafford and pick up the A513 towards Milford at Radford Bank. The road leads directly into the centre of Milford by the Common where there is a large car park. There is a small fee for car parking. Alternatively, there are one or two other car parks nearby which make no charge.
Starting at Milford Common, we leave the common and head toward Brocton Coppice, an ancient area of forest. We leave Brocton for Oldacre Valley and thereafter head to Spring Slade Lodge. Tradition dictates that we stop here for a well earned rest and possibly egg and chips! From there, we walk through Sherbrook Brook Valley and back towards Milford Common. A pint in the Barley Mow will no doubt be waiting and for those of you who haven't had quite enough calories, the desserts there are fantastic! Lunch required.

Sunday, 16th January 2011   MAER AND HILL CHORLTON FROM BALDWIN'S GATE    6 miles  4 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SJ795403. From Stafford: Go up the A34 and turn left onto the A51 at Meaford. Go along the A51 until you reach a left turn onto the A53 towards Newcastle-Under-Lyme. Along this road you will reach the village/town of Balwins's Gate. Park up at the Sheet Anchor pub. From Stoke: Go down the A53 from Newcastle-Under-Lyme then follow the above once you reach Baldwins's Gate.
A ramble around the Chapel and Hill Chorlton parish. Starting from the village of Baldwins, we head south meeting the railway line, passing around Hill Chorlton on the way, then come down alongside to Chapel Chorlton and down amongst the farming folk of the area and then up though the tiny village of Maer back to the start point! Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:15am    Grid Ref: SJ960534. FROM CHEDDLETON: From main road (A520), turn up Hollow Lane (opposite The Red Lion Pub) pass The Community Centre on the right, and turn right down Park Lane. Continue for about a mile: Deep Hayes Visitor Centre car park is sign posted on left just before the canal bridge.FROM STOKE: Take A53 towards Leek, go through Endon and turn right at Longsdon, sign posted Deep Hayes Country Park. Use the Visitor Centre car park on the right, just over the canal.
A picturesque walk encompassing Deep Hayes, Caldon Canal and The Flint Mill, Cheddletons' old mining area. Fairly easy walking on towpaths, lanes and fields. Toilets/refreshments should be available at Deep Hayes Visitor Centre car park. Lunch required.

Sunday, 30th January 2011   GUN FROM RUDYARD    10 miles  6 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ939611. Head out from Leek towards Macclesfield on the A523. Keep going until you've driven the length of Rudyard Reservoir (on your left), then take the next left into Beat Lane (if you get to Ruston Spencer you've gone too far). In Beat Lane take the first left again, to enter Reacliffe Road. Parking is by the side of the road, where the road forks.
Starting from the Ruston Spencer end of Rudyard Reservoir, we'll wander through Ruston Spencer itself, reach the summit of Gun to take in the views, and finish with a stroll beside the reservoir, before finally putting our feet up in the pub. Lunch required.

Sunday, 6th February 2011   BLITHFIELD RESEVOIR    9 miles  5 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK080246. In the centre of Abbots Bromley turn left (coming from Stafford) up School House Lane opposite the Goats Head pub. The car park is on the right.
From Abbots Bromley we will circumnavigate Blithfield Reservoir, known for its bird life, passing Blithfield Hall and the river Blith. A pleasant walk across fields and down country lanes. Lunch required.

Sunday, 13th February 2011   BARTHOMLEY, ENGLESEA-BROOK AND WESTON    8 miles  5 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ770522. From Stafford take J16 off the M6 to Nantwich, then the B5078 towards Alsager and continue onto Barthomley (SatNav may be a bit iffy here - do a u-ee and head back to the roundabout and follow signs). Parking is at the back of the church next to the White Lion Inn (CW2 5PG), but is limited.
The walk explores the pleasant and gently undulating countryside of south Cheshire and both Barthomley and Englesea-brook are particularly attractive and interesting villages. There are extensive views to be had but be prepared for the 50 stiles which we'll be climbing - as Lee2 said, 'we'll be walking in stile'! Lunch required.

Sunday, 20th February 2011   WHEATON ASTON AND MITTON    9 miles  6 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ852126. From the A5, turn off at Ivetsy Bank towards Wheaton Aston. Follow the road into Wheaton Aston and after the Post Office on the left, there is a sign for the village car park pointing right. Take the right and the car park is on the left hand side.
Starting from the village car park in Wheaton Aston, we pick up the Shropshire Union Canal and then join the Staffordshire Way. We will cross Bickford Meadows, an area of Scientific Interest, before heading into Mitton. From there we walk across farmland before meeting the Shropshire Union Canal once again for our return into Wheaton Aston and a well earned pint in the pub! Lunch required.

Sunday, 27th February 2011   MALPAS MEANDER    9 miles  5 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SJ487472. From Whitchurch take the A441 north towards Chester. At Grindley Brook take the left turn onto B5395 signposted Malpas. Once in Malpas, about 100 yards after the CoOp and just before Post Office & dry cleaners there's a small public car park off the High Street to the right. Meet in the car park.
A "lengthy but undemanding" [according to the book...] walk exploring the attractive & gently undulating countryside of south-west Cheshire to the south & east of Malpas and close to both the Shropshire and Welsh boarders....including fine views across to the hills of North Wales (weather dependent, of course). At least a mile or two on quiet country lanes, majority of walk across felds. Lunch required.

Sunday, 6th March 2011   ON THE LEAD MINERS TRACKS    11 miles  6 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK270620. From the A6 turn Left (heading from Matlock) towards Darley Bridge. Follow the road past the Square and Compass and turn left just after the bridge (signposted Oker) Park in the car park immediately on the left.
From Darley Bridge we go through the villages of Wensley, Bonsall and Snibberton, the walk has many ups and down and passes through countryside that was once used for lead mining with views over the Derwent Valley. Lunch required.

Sunday, 13th March 2011   HOLLINSCLOUGH & PILSBURY    13 miles  7 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK089650. Take the A53 out of Leek towards Buxton. The road to Longnor is sign posted; it's the first right turn after The Winking Man pub. Parking is free in front of the Craft Centre, Longnor, but spaces are limited.
Setting out from Longnor, we'll pass through Hardings Booth, Hollinsclough and on to Glutton Bridge. We'll be walking near the River Dove as we pass through Crowdicote and down to Pilsbury, before heading north again to return to Longnor, and a relaxing pint in the pub. Lunch required.

Sunday, 20th March 2011   ASHLEY AROUND LOGGERHEADS    8 miles  6 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ762363. From Stafford: Take the A34 north out of Stafford, then just after Meaford, take the A51 to Nantwich. Go though Satbleford and Chapel Chorlton reaching The Swan with Two Necks pub. Just after the pub, take a left onto the A53 to Shrewsbury. Go along the A53 and take the second turn on the left along Rock Lane down to Ashley. Carry on along Rock Lane until you reach School Lane on the right and park in the car parking area infront of the Meynell Arms pub.
We start off south down from Ashley down to Greenland Coppice, then head up to Middle Coppice and past Akesworth Coppice. Keeping on north, we eventually reach Maer (that place again!). Going north out of Maer, we head up to Berry Hill, going round Red Hill and War Hill (we may summit these also!) We head south afterwards down to The Bogs and going north along The Wellings and back down Rock Lane to a well-deserved drink in Ashley! Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ996661. The starting point and parking is at Gradbach carpark (SK17 0SU)
A hard but rewarding walk. Starting at Gradbach we make our way over to Danebridge, taking in the Hanging Stone then down over the Roaches, a little scrambling is necessary here and return via the mystical Lud's Church. (A good test walk for all those coming on the Scafell Pike Weekend at Easter) Lunch required.

Sunday, 3rd April 2011   BARLASTON AND TRENTHAM MONUMENT    7 miles  4 hrs   Grade 1
Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SJ879409. Meet at the Toby Carvery, Longton Road, Trentham, ST4 8BU.
A not too demanding walk. We'll walk along the canal to Barlaston, cross fields to Tittensor then a gentle climb up to Trentham Monument. We'll then walk through the woods surrounding Trentham Gardens before returning via the Garden Centre. Ice cream available! Lunch required.

Sunday, 10th April 2011   SHUTLINGSLOE, CROKER HILL & WINCLE MINN    12 miles  7 hrs   Grade 3
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ982686. From Leek take the A523 (Macclesfield Rd). At the Bosley Crossroads, turn right onto the A54. Just before Algreave, turn left towards Wildboarclough. After passing the Crag Inn, continue for a few hundred feet and park on the left, opposite a T junction.
Starting from Wildboarclough quarry car park we ascend Shutlingsloe, and then continue on to Macclesfield Forest where we pick up the Gritstone Trail. Following this path we climb up to Croker Hill, famous for its telecommunications tower which is visible for miles around. Next, we head for the ridge of Wincle Minn before returning to the car park via Hammerton Moss. Weather permitting, there should be cracking views over the Cheshire Plain. Expect some steep ascents and descents on this walk, especially at the start. Overall, there is approximately 800 metres (2,600 feet) of ascent over the length of the walk. Lunch required.

Sunday, 17th April 2011   AXE EDGE    9 miles  5 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK054733. Meet in the Pavillion Gardens Car Park in the centre of Buxton (clearly singposted off the A53 from Leek. This is however quite expensive and there is free parking on nearby by streets, for example if you take the A5004 towards Whaley Bridge and take the first left turn onto Park Rd, you may well be able to park there.
An undulating and varied walk which passes by Pooles Cavern and Solomon's Temple before heading into the dark peak and across Axe Edge Moor then returns into Buxton passing near the HSE testing laboratries.

Based at Wasdale Hall youth hostel we will ascend England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike (978m). Other highlights for the weekend may include a ridge walk from Whin Rigg to Illgill Head, overlooking Wast Water (England's deepest lake). We also have an option to travel along the Cumbria Coastal Way and the River Esk, from Ravenglass to Muncaster Castle. ***NOW FULLY BOOKED***

As it's directly following Ade and Sherrie's lakes weekend which will be quite hard going, this one is planned at being more relaxed and easier going. Sunday, 15th May 2011   ALVELEY AND THE SEVERN VALLEY    13 miles  7 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SO755840. The village of Alveley is halfway between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster off the A442. We start from the Country Park at Alveley, which is signposted from the A442. The sign is for 'Severn Valley Country Park'. Be careful, it comes up on you very quickly as you enter the village! (£1 parking charge for all day) Once you turn off the A442, follow the winding road, sometimes single track, until you see a wooden sign on the right for the Park.
A beautiful, scenic walk through the 'quintessencially English' Shropshire countryside, near to the Severn Valley Railway which operates regular steam train services. We will be walking to Hampton Loade and crossing the river on the old ferry boat (75p each), then following part of the Jack Mytton Way through Highley before heading to Arley Station. We then return along the banks of the Severn with the sound of train whistles echoing along the valley. Famous ice-cream available at Arley, and swings to occupy Beckie at the start. Lunch required.

Sunday, 22nd May 2011   DOVE DALE FROM ASHBOURNE    14 miles  8 hrs   Grade 3
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK180467. Travelling east on the A50, after Uttoxeter take the A515 into Ashbourne. The walk will start from the Car Park in the centre of Ashbourne (where they hold the market) - on the junction of Buxton Road and Union Street. There is a free car park five minutes walk away, on the right, up Cokayne Avenue.
Leaving Ashbourne on the Tissington Trail we'll wander through Mapleton, and accompany the rivers Dove and Manifold to reach Ilam. Passing over by Ilam Rock we'll descend into Dove Dale briefly, before passing over by Hanson Grange and returning to Ashbourne along the Tissington Trail. Lunch required.

*** NOW FULLY BOOKED *** EMAIL RE PAYMENT SENT TO THOSE BOOKED *** Weekend away in some of England's finest countryside, staying at the YHA...and only a "short" drive from Staffordshire (so it's possible to come down early Saturday to save a night's accommodation...there is still a recession!) Routes, times, grades all yet to be confirmed. However, places will be limited so please let me know soonest as first come, first on the list. YHA cost is 20/night + breakfast is available. However as the hostel is a Grade II listed 17th Century town house in the centre of an historic market town, expect it should be nice! Please let me know soonest if you're interested.

Saturday, 4th June 2011   COOMBES VALLEY RSPB SATURDAY WALK    4 miles  2 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK009534. The reserve lies off the A523 road to Ashbourne, three miles (4.8 km) east of Leek. Leave Leek on the Ashbourne road. After passing Bradnop, turn up the minor road (and across a railway line) to Apesford (signposted to RSPB Coombes Valley) - the reserve is on the left after a mile (1.6 km).As this is part of the RSPB open day, car spaces may be at a premium so perhaps some car sharing would be advisable.
A shortish but very picturesque walk around this lovely RSPB nature reserve, passing several historic halls and back to Coombes in time for the start of the open day BBQ ;0)... Please text me to confirm your attendance, preferably the night before.

Sunday, 5th June 2011   CAER CARADOC AND THE LAWLEY    12 miles  7 hrs   Grade 3
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SO454936. From Shrewsbury take the A49, then the B4371 into Church Stretton. Parking is on the Easthope Road car park.
From Church Stretton we'll travel towards Caer Caradoc Hill, and ascend the ridge past Three Fingers Rock. Continuing on past the remains of the Iron Age hill fort near the summit, we'll descend via Little Caradoc, before the steep ascent to the Lawley (look out for the area's famous ravens flying above us!). Our return journey will be via "The Wilderness" and Willstone Hill. Expect some very steep ascents (about 750 metres) and descents on this walk. Lunch required.

Saturday, 11th June 2011   THE EDINBURGH MOONWALK 2011 - WALK THE WALK UNITING AGAINST BREAST CANCER    3 nights    Grade 3
A few of us are planning to once again walk the full Marathon distance around Edinburgh at night in a bra - to raise money for breast cancer research.

Sunday, 12th June 2011   EDALE AND KINDER DOWNFALL    10 miles  7 hrs   Grade 3
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK125854. From Hathersage, head West on the A6187 to the village of Hope, then turn right at the sign for Edale. Follow the road for a few miles, and on entering Edale, the Car Park is on the right. Charge of £5 applies for all day.
This walk takes us from Edale up Grindsbrook Clough and on to Kinder Scout into the land of peat! We follow the sunken groughs through to Kinder downfall, then head south toward the mysterious Kinder Low before descending Jacob's Ladder and returning for well earned refreshments in Edale at The Old Nag's Head, the start point of the Pennine Way. NOTE! This walk can be challenging, especially in wet weather, and has a long steep and rocky ascent at the start. After that it's generally flat with some ups and downs into and out of the peat channels. Lunch required.

Sunday, 19th June 2011   RUGELEY, BISHTON AND COLTON    8 miles  4 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK048190. Directions to Rugeley Trent Valley Station:- From Stafford take the A513 towards Milford. Continue through Milford and at Wolseley Bridge take the A51 towards Rugeley. At the next roundabout take the B5013 towards the station, which is signposted from this roundabout. There is ample parking on the road by The Yorkshireman (WS15 3HB) opposite the station entrance.
A green and pleasant walk around part of Trent Valley with Cannock Chase providing a wooded backdrop for part of the walk. Starting at Rugeley Trent Valley Station, we pick up the Trent and Mersey Canal and head towards Wolseley Bridge. We carry on to the hamlet of Bishton. Passing through, we head towards Colton, picking up the Staffordshire Way. We return to the Station across fields and farmland. The Yorkshireman will no doubt be able to thereafter provide some refreshment! Lunch required.

Sunday, 26th June 2011   BUTTERTON FROM WATERHOUSES    12 miles  7 hrs   Grade 3
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK084501. Waterhouses is on the A523 Leek to Ashbourne Road. Turn off by Ye Old Crown Inn, sign posted for Manifold Track Cycle Hire and Cauldon Lowe, and the car park is on the left next to the cycle hire. Bring some change for the parking meter.
An undulating walk from Waterhouses, taking in Butterton, Wettonmill (ice cream opportunities), Ladyside, Grindon and sections of the Manifold Trail. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ935623. From Leek take the A523 Macclesfield road and travel to Rushton Spencer. On entering the village, turn left into Station Lane and proceed to the Knot Inn. Parking is adjacent to the pub, on the Staffordshire Way car park.
From Rushton we travel over moorlands, past the neolithic Bridestones monument, and continue through woodland up and over Bosley Cloud (a fairly steep climb to the summit). Following the River Dane and the disused North Rode to Leek railway line we return to Rushton, where the opportunity of a well-earned pint awaits. Lunch required.

A picturesque ramble from Youlgreave along the River Bradford then through Long Dale and Gratton Dale to Elton and return via Robin Hood's Stride rocks and the hermits cave.Please text me to confirm your attendance. Lunch required.

Friday, 15th July 2011   THE GLYDERS AND NANTLLE RIDGE    3 nights    Grade 4
Camping at Gwern Gof Isaf (post code LL24 0EU) we will undertake an ascent of Y Garn and the Glyders on Saturday. Sunday will be an ascent up to and over the Nantlle Ridge. Please note that we will be undertaking challenging mountain walks which include scrambling, so previous experience of walking in mountain conditions is a pre-requisite for anyone wishing to come on this weekend.

Sunday, 17th July 2011   KINDER SCOUT FROM THE GROUSE    12 miles  6 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK033907. The walk start is on the A624 between Hayfield and Glossop. Parking is in the lay by just north of the Grouse Inn.(Nearest post code SK13 6JY)
We immediately start climbing Kinder Scout I'm afraid, but once it flattens off that's the majority of the up-hill done. Following the ridge of Kinder Scout with panoramic views, we join the Pennine Way from the fairly impressive water fall at Kinder downfall. Once we descend from Kinder we return to the carpark with two more significant climbs across the heath and moorland of the lower slopes. Lunch required.

Sunday, 24th July 2011   SWYNNERTON & BEECH VIA CLIFFORD WOODS    8 miles  6 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ850350. From Meaford on the A34 take the A51 to Whitchurch. After passing over the M6 look for a left turn down to Swynnerton. Once in Swynnerton, park in the Fitzherbert Arms Pub car park where we'll start from!

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK352240. From the A50 leave at the junction signposted for the A514 towards Swadlincote/Swarkestone. Follow this road into Ticknall and then turn right into Ingelby Lane and then left into the Village Hall car park. If the car park is full there are normally some spaces on the road.
An enjoyable walk in the East Midlands starting in the old village of Ticknall going through the woods and fields to Ingleby and walking along the Trent River before dropping down past Foremark Reservoir and Carvers Rocks then back through Calke Park to the car park. Lunch required.

This is a 22 mile challenging walk around the Weaver Hills combining parts of the Staffordshire Way, Limestone Way and the Weaver Walk developed by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, taking in the towns of Oakamoor, Waterhouses, Ellastone and Alton. A longer walk with undulating terrain throughout but extremely rewarding. NOTE: SATURDAY WALK, and CHALLENGING! Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK149829. Take the A6 northward out of Buxton, through Dove Holes and turn left onto the A623 towards Sparrowpit. At Sparrowpit turn off the A623 past The Wanted Inn, to join Wannats Pass on the A6187 which will take you into Castleton. Just inside Castleton, turn left at the mini-roundabout into the large public car park where we'll meet for the start of the walk. If you're early enough there is some free on road parking, on the right as you enter Castleton.
Leaving Castleton, we'll head up to Hollins Cross and Mam Tor before descending to Barber Booth and heading across to Edale. We'll then return to Hollins Cross, and visit Lose Hill before descending to Hope and heading back to Castleton along by the river. Lunch required.

Friday, 26th August 2011   BRECON BEACONS WEEKEND    3 nights    Grade 4
NOW FULLY BOOKED!! Come and enjoy a weekend in the spectacular Brecon Beacons National Park staying at Llwyn y Celyn YHA hostel. On arrival on Friday, we'll have a short leisurely stroll down to the nearby reservoir to stretch legs before day 2! Saturday will include ascending the 2000ft+ heights of Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cribyn and Fan y Big. A challenging day! Sunday will be an easier walk around the Fforest Fawr area, and Monday maybe a trip into Brecon to stroll down the canal or go up Pen y Crug for a view of the town. Cost is £18.50 pppn. Breakfast and dinners are available at the hostel. Nearest pub/restaurant is in Brecon, a few miles away.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK001169. Directions to Parr's Warren Car Park: - Take the A34 from Stafford towards Cannock. At Pottal Pool island, take the first exit. Follow the road for some way and will pass the White House (an old hotel on your left). Carry on and the road bends sharply to the right. Parr's Warren car park can be found just after the bend on the left hand side.
This walk is a joint walk with both One Step Walkers and Notts/Derby 20s & 30s group. It is the first tri-group walk we have offered. Beckie isn't leading the walk but can provide further details. Lunch required.

A walk from Swynnerton Old Park, discovering the legacy of Hanchurch's watery heritage(or so the book says)- something to do with water towers. A nice gentle walk over undemanding terrain. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SJ658741. We'll enter the woodlands from Northwich town centre via Carey Park. Park on the free all-day Cumberland Car Park on Leicester Street (there are several car parks along this road, check the signs), nearest post code is CW9 5LD.
A relaxed walk which includes a diverse range of habitats including mature woodland, flower-rich grassland, wetland and open water, and an open-air swimming pool at our lunch stop! At roughly the half-way point is the Anderton Boat Lift and a chance for ice-cream, before swinging back along our route and the opportunity for a wee tipple at the pub! Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SJ905546. At Brown Edge take Sandy Lane next to Keith's Supermarket and workshop and follow up the hill along Hough Hill. Turn left at Hill top road, and just past the Rose and Crown pub is the Marshes Hill Car park (nearest post code:ST6 8TX)
Walk starts by heading down hill to Knypersley reservoir where follow the shoreline before heading up to Robin Hill, returning to the start along the moorland heath ridge. The walk is gentle but has a few short climbs Lunch required.

Sunday, 9th October 2011   TIMBERSBROOK    11 miles  6 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ894627. From Leek take the A523, and on entering Rushton Spencer, turn left into Beat Lane. Follow this road for a few miles and continue along Dial Lane; then look for a right turn into Tunstall Road. After about a mile keep slightly left, and continue along Weathercock Lane (at the junction with the statue of a bear go straight on into Weathercock Lane), and the village car park will be on the right.
A varied walk combining fairly steep ascents and descents and easier footpaths. From Timbersbrook we follow paths and tracks to Whitemore, and then start the ascent to Congleton Edge. At the top we follow the Gritstone Way towards Mow Cop, and then descend along the South Cheshire Way path to Akers Crossing. We then join the tow path forming the Cheshire Ring Canal Walk and follow it for a few miles until we reach the edge of Congleton. We then cross over the canal and head back to the car park. Head to Whitchurch along The Nantwich Road (A525) going through Broughall reaching the first roundabout and go straight over the roundabout taking the B5398 to the town centre. At the end turn right onto the B5395 (Bridgewater Street) and then lookout for a large car park on your left with Iceland, Blockbuster Video and Home Bargains!
Starting from Whitchurch we quickly go north to get ourselves up to Marley Cum Quoisley for a swift pint at The Swan, following it further around to get onto the Llangollen Canal where we start to head ona long south trek. Eventually we will get to the South Cheshire Way where we start to head back to the to part of Whitchurch. Lunch required.

Sunday, 23rd October 2011   TUTBURY & THE FAULD CRATER    10 miles  5 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK211289. From the A50 take the A511 to Burton. Drive through Hatton and over the railway line and river and at the roundabout go straight on into Bridge Street and then Monk Street at the bottom of the road turn left and left again into the village car park.
We walk through Tutbury village along the Dove River before climbing up towards Hanbury and the Fauld Crater (Site of the largest ever explosion on British shores checkout - http://www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/content/articles/2008/08/15/hanbury_crater_feature.shtml). We then have a pleasant stroll across to the picturesque villages of Anslow and Rolleston before making our way back to Tutbury. Lunch required.

Sunday, 30th October 2011   FRADLEY AIRFIELD    10 miles  5 hrs   Grade 1
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK152128. Directions to Fradley Co-op:- From the A38 northbound, take the exit for Fradley Industrial Park (Fradley South) NOT the turn for Fradley Village. (If you take this turn, you will find it very difficult to find the start point as it is behind an extensive housing estate, so be warned!!) At the first island, go straight on to the next island where you turn right onto Common Lane. Then take your first right into Blenheim Road and the Co-op Food Store, where there is parking, is on your left. (The approximate postcode for the start point is WS13 8NQ for sat nav purposes).
We start at the Co-op Food Store in Fradley (as there is plenty of parking) and quickly move away from the urbanisation onto fields and canals. This is a relatively easy and flat walk covering a fine and historical area. Starting at the disused Fradley Airfield, we will walk through some beautiful South Staffordshire countryside to the village of Elmhurst where Tudor properties can be seen. From Elmhurst, we head north to join the Trent & Mersey Canal to eventually meet Fradley Junction. There might be time for a quick pint in the Swan Inn at the junction before our return journey along the Coventry canal back to Fradley. From the Lazy Trout pub in Meerbrook, we'll wander along country roads & fields up the valley (with a couple of short steep inclines) on to the Roaches for magnificent views (weather permitting) across Staffordshire in all directions. Then head back down across fields & lanes to the pub...for a pint/cuppa. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK166051. The free car park is a large lay-by on the A51 between Tamworth and Lichfield. It is just outside the village of Hopwas.
We start opposite Hopwas Hayes woods on a pleasant field walk to the edge of Lichfield, with distant views of the cathedral spires. We then walk through part of Whittington Barracks (and firing range!) and through strawberry fields towards the Birmingham and Fazeley canal. The canal looks very attractive at this time of year, as do Hopwas woods. We pass some old WWII pill box defences for the River Tame before returning through the woods for refreshments in Hopwas at The Tame Otter. Lunch required.

Start Time: 12 noon    Grid Ref: SK205641. Youlgreave is reached from the A515, signposted down a minor road off the A515 9 1/2 miles out of Buxton. After turning off the 515, follow the road for a few yards to the first right turn (also signed. Follow the signs for Youlgreave for about 3 miles and the free car park is on the left just before entering the village. The walk starts from outside church opposite The George pub.
This is a walk combined with One Step Walkers. The walk is from Youlgreave to Robin Hood's Stride, a rock formation well known locally, and an ideal lunch stop! The walk is via Riley bank and Dunsdale, returning to Youlgrave for refreshments at the local pub. Lunch required.

Sunday, 18th December 2011   CANNOCK CHASE CIRCULAR    8 miles  4 hrs   Grade 1
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ978182. From Stafford, head towards Cannock on the A34. Turn off left for Brocton just before the Chetwynd Arms. Follow the road to the village centre. Don't follow the road into Milford but head right up the hill (past the little Church) towards Cannock Chase. Continue up the hill and the second car park you come to, when the road flattens out, is the Glacial Boulder car park where the walk begins.
Gentle paths with some steep sections. The walk covers a large area of the smallest mainland AONB in the UK. Beginning at local landmark, the Glacial Boulder, it continues across the heathland to the pine woodlands in Brindley Heath. The route takes you past the Visitor Centres at both Marquis Drive and Birches Valley before crossing over the quarry to Sherbrook Valley. Points to Remember:
1. Please call the walk leader before the walk in case any details have changed.
2. Make sure that you are suitably dressed for the weather. Remember that some walks are on exposed high land and the weather can be cold and wet. Denim jeans are not suitable for high-level walks.
3. Dogs are welcome but only with the prior agreement of the walk leader
4. If the walk leader decides to shorten the walk then that decision is final and is not open to negotiation. The leader will only do this when there is a good reason for doing so.
5. Even if a walk does not state packed lunch, it is always advisable to bring something to eat and drink.
6. If transport is shared, please provide the driver with a share of the fuel costs.
7. Non RA members are welcome to join us for 3 walks before being asked to join the RA. There are no exceptions to this.
8. Regrettably, due to the nature of the Sunday programme, we are unable to accept children on our these walks.
