Sunday, 7th January 2007   CANNOCK CHASE    8 miles  5 hrs   Grade 1
Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SJ980175. On the A34 from Stafford to Cannock turn left after the Chetwynd Arms (Pub is on right) on to Camp Road. After a few hundred yards take the first left onto Chase Road. Parking is at the Chase Road Corner Car Park located on the first sharpish bend.
A lovely walk across the varying terrain of the Chase allowing us to shake a leg after the Xmas and New Year Excesses. We will wend are way over to Milford Common for a spot of lunch (useful for those who are too exhausted to carry their own lunch) before working our way back over the gentle undulating hills back to the cars. Lunch required.

Saturday, 13th January 2007   DOXEY MARSHES SHORT WALK    4 miles  2 hrs   Grade 1
Start Time: 12 noon    Grid Ref: SJ912249. Take the A5013 Eccleshall Road to or from Stafford town centre ... if travelling towards Stafford then Holmcroft Road is on the left hand side, if travelling from Stafford its on the right. Park in Holmcroft Road, or one of the side roads ... we'll meet on the main Eccleshall Road outside the Tillington Hall Sign.
A gentle wander through the delights of Doxey Marshes, past the nature reserve and bird hides and skirting back through Stafford ... past the common.

Sunday, 14th January 2007   PECKFORTON HILLS    9 miles  5 hrs   Grade 1
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ520550. From Nantwich take the A534 towards Wrexham; Go through Bulkeley and carry on until you have passed the Bickerton Poacher Pub on your left hand side. Take the next turning on the right called Copper Mine Lane. Follow the lane to the bottom where there is plenty of parking.
We follow the Sandstone trail around Peckforton Castle to the summit of Bulkley Hill which should give us good views into Shropshire and the Staffordshire Hills .... weather permiting.We then descend and follow lanes and field paths back to Beeston Castle. For those with energy left we'll climb up to Beeston Castle ... which was built in 1226 and its history stretches back over 4,000 years to when it was a Bronze Age hill fort ... its been said to have the most stunning views from any castle in England. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK149666. Meet at the car park in the centre of Monyash Village. This is reached by turning of the A515 onto the B5055 towards Monyash then turn L at cross roads in the village.
A classic walk walk starting from the pretty village of Monyash and travelling throught Lathkill Dale and return. Lunch required.

The first of a new series of pub meets. Although we arrange a wide and varied social programme, on the last Friday of every month we are holding pub meets especially aimed at welcoming new members to the group. Old and new members meet up to find out group news, info on weekends and a general gossip! We alternate the pub meets between Hanley, Newcastle, Leek, Stafford and Stone to give everyone the opportunity of turning up. We start about 8pm and although we don't have any kind of banners or posters with the group name on - you'll find us OK ! FROM CHEDDLETON: From main road (A520), turn up Hollow Lane (opposite The Red Lion Pub) pass The Community Centre on the right, and turn right down Park Lane. Continue for about a mile: Deep Hayes Visitor Centre car park is sign posted on left just before the canal bridge. FROM STOKE: Take A53 towards Leek, go through Endon and turn right at Longsdon, sign posted Deep Hayes Country Park. Use the Visitor Centre car park on the right, just over the canal.
A picturesque walk encompassing Deep Hayes, Caldon Canal and The Flint Mill, Cheddletons' old mining area. Fairly easy walking on towpaths, lanes and fields. Toilets/refreshments should be available at Deep Hayes Visitor Centre car park.

Sunday, 28th January 2007   CHATSWORTH HOUSE & BEELEY MOOR FROM BASLOW    11 miles  5 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK258721. Head to Buxton on the A53. Head out on the A6 to Bakewell. Turn onto the A6020 then onto the A619 into Baslow. We will be starting from the Baslow Nether End Car Park.
A picturesque walk through the grounds of Chatsworth House and the local villages of Beeley and Baslow, and we will also be passing the Swiss and Emperor Lakes. If we get a cold, clear, crisp day it will make this a walk to remember.

Start Time: 11:00am    Grid Ref: SJ993603. Exit Leek on the Buxton Road. Turn left by the Three Horseshoes and follow the road down to Tittesworth. Meet on the pay and display car park (there is some free parking on the main road).
A leisurely stroll around Tittesworth Reservoir with a stop in the tea shop at the end for good measure.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK018758. From Buxton take the A5004 toward Buxworth. Take the first left off this road and parking is next to Errwood Reservoir.
A walk exploring the mysterious moors and romantic ruins of the Goyt Valley. It's a varied route with huge views from the highest point in the southern half of the Peak District. Lunch required.

Start Time: 7:30pm Take B5066 from Meir Heath (SOT) towards Hilderstone. The Spotgate is located on your left about four miles from Meir Heath.
A chance to taste again good English fare in a railway carriage, incongruously sited behind the pub. A good time was had last time, and we expect you to do the same this time.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK304268. Meet a t the car park in the centre of Repton. From the A38 turn off onto the A5132 north of Burton upon Trent and then right onto the A5008. Take the second left on sharp bend in the village to reach the car park.
Starting at the village where Roald Dahl went to school a walk in the Trent Valley passing through Foresmark, Ingelby and by the Hangman's Stone. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SJ900339. Meet at the car park to the rear of Sommerfields off Crown Street. Turn off the A34 into Stone follow the road to the oneway system, the car park is on the right after the public car park.
We walk along the Trent and Mersey Canal to the edge of Stone we briefly enter open countryside before return to Stone and visiting one its drinking establishments. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK214296. Take the A511 from Burton towards the A50; Go round Tutbury and parking is on the left hand side, just before the river Dove; If you reach Hatton then you've gone to far ...
From Tutbury .... and its ruin of an 11th century catsle ... we walk across predominantly pasture and meadow to Hanbury; We then walk to Fauld's Crater .... 400ft deep and covering 12 acres this is the site of the largest explosion to happen in Britain. The return leg provides impressive views over the Dove Valley and the castle at Tutbury. Lunch required.

We missed the opportunity in 2006 but the Oxford weekend is back for 2007. On the Saturday we will be taken on one of Mr Baddeley's legendary tours of the finer drinking establishments of this wonderful city. The day is open to members of the Oxfordshire 20's 30's group to join us, and we will be joining their group walk on the Sunday. Start Time: 12 noon    Grid Ref: SK038069. Parking is at the south end of the lake reached from the A5 near Brownhills. Turn left up Pool Road (if coming from cannock) between Hednesford Road and White Horse Road. Signs for parking on left up Pool Road just as you reach the lake.
A beautiful walk around Chasewater lake. An area which has many diverse leisure activities including sailing and mator boats.

Start Time: 9:30am    Grid Ref: SO897908. Follow A449 (Stourbridge Road) from Wolverhampton for about 5 - 6 miles. Take right turning at crossroads onto B4176. Follow road for about 1.5 miles. Turn right down lane (called Crooked House Lane, I think) leading to meeting point at Crooked House pub.
Starting at the weird and intriguing Crooked House pub the walk proceeds to and through Baggeridge Country park before crossing over to join the Monarch way. The walk will follow the Monarch way, some of the Staffs / Worcestershire Canal and then onto the South Staffs Railway Walk which brings us back to the starting point and hopefully a beverage or two at the pub. Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SJ214422. Park in centre of Llangollen. Meet at Llangollen railway station ready for the 11am departure to Carrog. Cost approx £5. Time and fare to be confirmed nearer the time.
After a trip on the Llangollen Steam Railway, we'll alight at Carrog station. The route then climbs over the undulating Llantysilio Mountain before passing Valle Crucis Abbey and returning to Llangollen. We won't start walking until about 11.30, so it will be a late finish.

Saturday, 24th March 2007   TIMBERSBROOK    4 miles  3 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 11:00am    Grid Ref: SJ895627. FROM LEEK: Take A523 north, then A54 from Bosley cross roads into Congleton. At the roundabout, take left exit (away from dual carriageway), then immediate straight on up the hill (A527 - Park Lane). Go over railway bridge and follow road for approx 1/2 mile. At traffic lights/old church, turn left and follow Reades Lane. After 1/2 mile turn left into Over Rainow Lane by (Coach & Horses pub) and (after 3/4 mile) into Timbersbrook village. Turn left into Weathercock Lane. Car park is 100yds on right. (Timbersbrook Picnic Area). FROM STOKE: A527 through Biddulph. On the outskirts of Congleton, take the right turn at the traffic lights by the old church, and into Reades Lane. Follow directions as above.
From Timbersbrook, the walk follows part of The Gritstone Trail and The Staffordshire Way, up over and around The Cloud. The route includes varied terrain through woodland to the top of The Cloud, by road round by The Cloud Methodist Church to The Bridestones Neolithic burial chamber, and on through fields/wooded valley where the Cheshire / Staffordshire boundary follows the brook. There are a couple of steep but short climbs, and some more gentle slopes. Fingers crossed the weather will be kind enough to show breathtaking views over the Cheshire countryside, and The Staffordshire Moorlands from the top of The Cloud. The walk is approximately 2-3 hours, and Grade 2 at the most. Lunch required.

Sunday, 25th March 2007   CRODEN ABBEY    12 miles  6 hrs   Grade 2
Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK036398. From Stoke, take A522 towards Lower Tean. At far outskirts of village, turn left on hairpin junction and follow road almost back on yourself. Take next right and follow road up the hill, taking car on sharp bend towards left on road. At next junction turn right. Then follow road for about 1/2 mile to another junction. Park here.
A walk through the Staffordshire woodland around Oakamoor, Great Gate and Hollington, calling in at the ruined abbey of Croxden (though apparently Henry VIII had nothing to do with reducing it - more likely dodgy building contractors). Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SD603443. As the route is somewhat convoluted after leaving the M6 at J32, it is recommended that those wishing to walk meet in SOT where the walk leader can navigate the convoy. It will also better organise the car arrangements. Phone walk leader for final arrangements the week before.
An excellent walk on the western edges of the Forest of Bowland, offering views of the South Lakes and the Three Yorkshire Peaks as well as Pendle Hill. We will finish of the day with some nice home made pie and chips at the pub in Chipping. Lunch required.

Start Time: 12 noon    Grid Ref: SK108047. Take the A5127 from Lichfield. Take the first left after driving over the M6 Toll to Stenstone. Parking is at The Plough & Harrow in the village.
The walk explores the beautiful countryside of Staffordshire and a chance to see the Shinning Stone Sculpture by the river. We will be going for lunch afterwards in Lichfield.

Saturday, 21st April 2007  KARTING
Start Time: 8:00pm From Leek - Follow A53 to Baddeley Green. Turn left to follow A5009 going straight through big crossroads junction (Lime Kiln lights) and turn left onto Victoria Road at next roundabout. Follow road up to top wher it joins City Road / Victoria Place Link. Continue straight up and onto King Street. The venue is on your left hand side. From A500-Turn off at junction with signing for Longton/Fenton. Go under railway bridge and straight up City Road to point where it joins Victoria Road. Go straight up onto King Street. FLK is on your left.
An evening of petrol karting at Fast Lane Karting in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. The venue organise several events which state a specific minimum number of drivers with a cost per head of approx £30.00. They do, however, run Bespoke events where you advise them of the number of drivers and the price you are willing to pay. For anyone interested I'd need to know numbers and how much you are willing to pay so I can contact them to arrange an event.

Start Time: 10:15am    Grid Ref: SK004622. Take the A6 from Leek to Buxton. At the signpost for Upper Hulme turn left. Follow the road, past the Potting Shed until you arrive at a large lay-by for parking. Meet at the Bus Stop (past Windygates farm). Car share where possible as it can get busy.
The walk goes 'behind' the Roaches on some of the lesser trodden paths before reaching the top. We head towards Danebridge and return via the Back Forest. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ373022. From Shrewsbury take the A488 towards Ploxgreen. Take the left before reaching the Ploxgreen and follow the road to Snailbeach.
The walk explores the length of the Stiperstones, including two crags that are often forgotten, and takes in a short circuit of the surrounding hills. Passing through grassy farmlands, dark forest and exposed heathlands, it provides a taste of the delights Shropshire has to offer. Lunch required.

Saturday, 12th May 2007   DANEBRIDGE / LUDCHURCH    5 miles  3 hrs   Grade 1
Start Time: 11:00am    Grid Ref: SJ960650. Follow A523 Macclesfield Road from Leek for 3 miles. Where the road veers off to the left turn right (this is the 1st right turn after the left hand turn for Rudyard). Follow road for half a mile and take first turning on your right. The road goes straight through to Danebridge (approx 3 miles). You can park at side of road just after the bridge over the River Dane.
A gentle undulating ramble through fields, lanes and forest pathways. Stopping on the way at Ludchurch, a curious chasm / ravine; legend claims it to be the possible meeting place between Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. Continuing along paths down to follow the River Dane returning to Danebridge. The walk will conclude with a well deserved pint at The Ship Inn.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK217687. Head into Bakewell and park on the public car park on the right after the Bride on the River Wye.
From Bakewell we walk through Over Haddon and the beautiful village of Youlgreave, taking in the views of Bradford and Lathkill Dale back along the River Wye into Bakewell. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SK085477. From Stoke, take A52 out towards Ashbourne. Bear left at junction at Jones & Shuffs, through Kingsley, Froghall and then Whiston. Five miles or so out past Whiston, go past Cauldon Lowe village hall on left. Continue on 50 yds PAST junction on right with B5417 to Wardlow Quarry entrance, also on right. This is walk start point.
Owing to impending birth of walk leader's son, this walk replaces Stalybridge Hills walk on same date as it's nearer to the hospital!! We will walk behind said hills towards Stanton, then part of the Limestone Way, Ellastone, Wootton Park and up onto the hills themselves. I hope to see you there. Lunch required.

Start Time: 11:00am    Grid Ref: SK052446. Meet in the Public Car Park 'Oakamoor' just after the Admirals pub. Follow the B5417 from Cheadle towards Oakamoor. Just before crossing the bridge into Oakamoor village turn right (signs for Ramblers Retreat). Just after the Admirals pub turn left into the car park.
An easy walk through an attractive woodland area. There is an excellent tea shop at the end where we can gather and have a bite to eat.

Start Time: 1:00pm    Grid Ref: SJ868407. Meet at 1.00pm the garden centre entrance by the main car park for a 4 mile(max) walk to the monument and then back to Trentham Park for a BBQ at 4.00pm onwards. Park near the church SJ865410 for the BBQ.

From Wetton we will traverse the side of Ecton Hill (alongside the Manifold Valley trail with good views towards Grindon and Butterton). Then over to Warslow and Grindon with a return climb to Thor's Cave. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:15am    Grid Ref: SH647556. Follow the A55 towards Bangor. Take the A470 to Betws-y-coed then the A5 to Capel Curig. Then take the A4086 towards Llanberis and after approx 1 mile from the junction with the A486 park at Pen-y-pass.
A fantastic ridge walk over Crib Goch and Crib y Ddysgl to the summit of Snowdon. Be prepared for scrambling and a ridge traverse. This is a Grade 4 walk so please call to confirm (or if you have any questions) Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SK225843. From Hathersage take the A6178 Hope Road, just after The George Head turn right up Jaggers Lane then L into Coggers Lane, where the road forks take the left fork and continue to the car park at Dennis Knoll.
After following the long causeway to Stanedge Pole and Redmires Reservoir we head north across moorland and return via Stanage Edge, an interesting walk with good views (weather permitting) Lunch required.

Meet at Earls Road canal junction at 8.30, then 9.15 at the Star Lock Stone or at 10.00 in Stafford outside the Hogshead. A moderate cycle ride along the very flat Trent Valley to Brewood,Codsall, Albrighton and on to the Ironbridge Gorge itself. Lunch is required but there will be pub stops on the way, (Holdens pub at Codsall Station). The distance from Stafford is only 29 miles and we shall be stopping the night at Coalport Y.H.A. Blisthill museum, and a host of other attractions, not least a Victorian brewery are well worth a visit once in Ironbridge. This is £16.50 for the night, only a few places are booked,and the Hostel gets fully booked in the summer,so the first people to send cheques to Nick will snap up the places.

If coming from Blists Hill Museum go down the hill and turn left towards Coalport. Parking is just on the left up a slight rise.
A walk in the beautiful Ironbridge Gorge taking in it's most famous attraction. We will cross to the south side of the river and make our way over to Benthall Hall, then cross the Ironbridge before heading back along the gorge. Hopefully we'll also meet up with the cyclists before they wend their way home! Lunch required.

From the A50 "D" road leave junction at Kidsgrove to follow the A34 for about 0.25 kilometres, take first right turn & follow road to Mount Pleasant; turn right at T-junction & follow road round for about 2 kilometres. Go past church on right hand side and take turning on the left (by Mow Cop Inn). Follow steep winding road to top; the road then descends steeply. Turn left to enter car park for Mow Cop.
A circular walk from Mow Cop through Roe Park along South Cheshire Way and down to the canal, following the canal for about 3 - 4 miles before crossing over to disused Biddulph Valley Railway (now footpath) and following the same to complete circular route via footpaths and roads back up to Mow Cop. Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SJ998662. Take the A53 Leek to Buxton road.Turn left onto minor road signposted to Gradbach just before the large pub on the right.At first junction turn right, then fork left, and go left at next two junctions. Car park is down the road to the Youth Hostel.
From Gradbach we follow the Dane Valley Way to Three Shires Head then head east to Axe Edge.From there we walk above the infant River Dove until we make for the narrow (for the Peak District!) ridge of Chrome Hill. Return is via Hollinsclough Moor and then westwards through fields back to the car park. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:30am    Grid Ref: SD657919. Follow M6 north up to junction 37. Take the A684 towards Sedbergh. When in the town of Sedburgh, go right, round church on right hand corner and straight down road to car parks. Estimated trip time from S-O-T will be about three hours. Note that if the car parks at Sedburgh are full, we will move on a little up to Tom Croft Hill at SD694912 and start from there. It is suggested that we meet at a convenient point in S-O-T and car-share from there. If you are planning to go, please let me know asap so that transport can be co-ordinated (should you wish).
A superb walk over the Howgills, which are those nice looking hills that you see from the M6 and West Coast Mainline whilst en-route to the N Lakes and Scotland, the ones that you always promised yourself that you'd walk up, if only time allowed. Well, now it does. All being well, your walk leader for the day will be a new daddy of two months by then. This means that a pre-walk recce may not have been carried out and so the walk may be subject to slightly differing routes from the one planned. Be assured that the walk will NOT be allowed to overrun and that superb views shall be had by all, followed by obligatory pie and pint at a hostelry no-doubt supplied by our Mr Baddeley's wondrous knowledge of where to go for these little pleasures in life. Walk starts in the pleasant town of Hope. We will be taking in one of the great viewpoints of Derbyshire - Lose Hill. Following the ridge which winds along high above the Vale of Edale. Then onto the Roman fort on top of Mam Tor. We will then follow Rushup Edge, then over into White Peak to take in the Caves of Castleton. Lunch required.

If coming from Church Stretton it is a layby on the left just after the turn off Hazler Road. There are public footpaths on left and right just before it and a sign about rubbish there. Parking is limited so car sharing advised.
A walk in a beautiful area of Shropshire offering spectacular views on a good day. We will head north over the hills of Caer Caradoc and Lawley before heading back south through Cardington and then over some of the smaller hills including Willstone and Hope Bowdler Hills. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:00am    Grid Ref: SH880297. Park in Llanuwchllyn village at the south west end of Bala Lake. Meet at the sharp bend in the road where the track/footpath for the Arans leaves the road.
After a long approach via Cwm Croes and Cwn Du, we'll ascend to Drysgol and then on to the summit of Aran Fawddwy, our high point for the day. We then return over the knobbly Arans ridge, crossing over Aran Benllyn and descending back to Llanuwchllyn with views over Bala Lake in the distance. This walk will take some of the best bits of the Dark Peak. We will be starting at Grindleford Sataion and walking over Stanage Edge, Win Hill and Kinder Plateau and getting the train back from Edale Station. Train fare will cost £3.50, so bring some change. Lunch required.

Avoiding the crowds we head north-west over the flanks of the Long Mynd before dropping down the valley leading to Ratlinghope. The return route is over Adstone Hill before climbing to the summit of the Long Mynd and then a gentle stroll leads back to Church Stretton. Lunch required.

Start Time: 10:15am    Grid Ref: SJ924235. From Junction 14 of the M6 follow the A34 into Stafford; follow the road round to the left (Ring Road) & at the next large island go right around and head back the way you have just come; the public car park is signposted on the left hand side...
A yuletide ramble through Stafford and a look at all of the Christmas attractions on offer ... this walk is a warm up for the annual Christmas dinner & afternoon good cheer drinking session ....

As requested a Christmas Lunch of non-traditional xmas food in Pastiche Stafford ... the festivities start in Pastiche at 1 pm ... & for the hardy souls amongst you there is rumour of a afternoon drinking session to welcome in the festive season Staffs Walkers style. Saturday, 29th December 2007   NEW YEAR'S EVE WEEKEND IN SALISBURY    3 nights    Grade 2
See the New Year in by one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Europe, marvel at its 13th century spire (the tallest in England) and see the original Magna Carta document located inside. Walks will include Stonehenge, at the top of the beautiful Woodford Valley,(where Nick used to live) and we pass a Jacobian Mansion where a certain rock star lives near "The Fields of Gold". As the New Forest is but 12 miles away a walk in the newest national park is also planned. Naturally the pubs have been meticulously researched for their beer quality and atmosphere and there are some unique hostelries, such as The Haunch of Venison; built as a chop house for the 13th century cathedral builders. The hostel is located in the city and parking is available, the cost is £52 for the three nights, cheques need to be with Nick by the end of September as the hostel will be fully booked.

Points to Remember:
1. Please call the walk leader before the walk in case any details have changed.
2. Make sure that you are suitably dressed for the weather. Remember that some walks are on exposed high land and the weather can be cold and wet. Denim jeans are not suitable for high-level walks.
3. Dogs are welcome but only with the prior agreement of the walk leader
4. If the walk leader decides to shorten the walk then that decision is final and is not open to negotiation. The leader will only do this when there is a good reason for doing so.
5. Even if a walk does not state packed lunch, it is always advisable to bring something to eat and drink.
6. If transport is shared, please provide the driver with a share of the fuel costs.
7. Non RA members are welcome to join us for 3 walks before being asked to join the RA. There are no exceptions to this.
8. Regrettably, due to the nature of the Sunday programme, we are unable to accept children on our these walks.
9. Children are welcome on Family Friendly walks.
